KEYWORD VS. KEY PHRASE IN AN SEO STRATEGY

I

t’s no surprise that digital marketing strategies change and transform as technology grows and gets “smarter.” One such area this is happening is the use of keywords for search engine optimization (SEO).

We dove into SEO and keyword research in a previous post. For a quick recap: SEO refers to content used to attract people searching for the information you offer on your website. This will affect how and where your website shows up in search results on a website. There are many factors to consider for strong SEO rankings on your website, and SEO strategy is constantly undergoing such evolutions.

Traditionally, strong SEO strategy focused on singular keywords that, presumably, the user was searching for on a search engine, such as Google.

One evolution of SEO shifted to include key phrases - or a series of about 4 words linked together - now also play a role. Consider someone searching for “vacation” or “best family vacation ideas.”

A key difference between using a keyword and a key phrase is the specific audience you can attract with the phrase over the general audience of a singular word. A keyword will have much higher search queries, but turn up less relevant results for users - so key phrases can fine tune the type of information a user receives.

Thinking about this can actually help inform your blog strategy, because you can identify key phrases that will work as strong topics for your ideal audience and maintain an ongoing content strategy speaking to various issues within that key phrase. New content is another one of the many approaches to improving your rankings. Learn more about SEO best practices by checking out related blogs here.
